Muro is one of the oldest towns in Mallorca

It includes two population areas: Muro and Playa de Muro, on the coast of the Alcudia bay. The city enjoys a privileged location, in the middle of a fertile plain well watered and protected from the strong north winds.

The population of Muro, of over 6,000 inhabitants, formerly dedicated to agriculture, nowadays mainly focuses on construction and services related to tourism. It is one of the oldest towns in Mallorca with several historical monuments (in 1,300 A.C. was recognized as a city by King Jaime II).

The origins of the Muro area date back to the Copper Age. In fact, one of the few settlements excavated is Ca na Cotxera (near Son Parera). There are also large Talayotic villages from the Iron Age, isolated talayots such as Sa Font de Son Morey and square talayots in Son Serra de Marina. The only remains from the Roman Era are some burials near the lagoon (Son Sant Martí).
