The gastronomy of Mallorca: quality products with an island soul

Designation of Origin in the gastronomy of Mallorca, a seal of quality

Beyond the popular sobrasada and the more than famous ensaimadas, Mallorca has the privilege of having some of the highest quality products of Spain. Proof of this are the many Designations of Origin that the island's gastronomy contains. And the latest addition to this list is the Mallorcan olive, better known by the islanders as the oliva trencada.

The green, split green and black table olive varieties of the island of Mallorca are now protected with the European seal, once they are handly harvested and fermented.

Now, our island can boast about its huge Mallorcan variety of this appreciated product, since the European Commission (EC) has added this variety in the European register of Designations of Origin (PDO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

From now on, the Olive Fair in Caimari, which takes place around the second half of November, will look more than ever.

Other recognized products of gastronomy in Mallorca

Mallorca has more products that are a source of pride for its consideration in Europe. Before the olive, the oil already had its own Designation of Origin. There are two types of oil that have received this consideration: a first type of oil called "fruity", which is obtained from green and healthy olives, and where the bitter and spicy attributes appear, as well as a yellow-greenish color.

The second type of oil called "sweet", is obtained mostly from ripe olives. Its most outstanding characteristic is its sweetness and softness, being the attributes of bitterness and spiciness practically absent. Also in the Fira de s'Oliva you can find these varieties of oil.

Another valued product is wine, both in the Designation of Origin Pla i Llevant and Binissalem, as well as the various geographical names of "Vins de la Terra" (local wines). The wines of Mallorca are usually clean wines, with frank and identifying aromas of the grape varieties of origin.

Precisely Binissalem dedicates to wine its most outstanding party, the Festa des Vermar. But Santa María del Camí also pays homage to the wine with the Festa del Vi Novell and Pollença dedicates a weekend to this product for the Wine Fair.

Each product a fair, this is Mallorca's soul. Are you going to miss them?
